Despite two retirements in a row, Nigel Mansell bounced back in the best possible way by taking pole position and converting it in his third win of the season and closing to within seven points of Michael Schumacher's championship lead. The reigning champion had finished this race in 3rd with Jacques Villeneuve sandwiching the pair.
