Horizon are an Irish team that have competed in FF1M since the 2012 season. They were founded by Evan Byrne and first raced in the 2011 FF2M season before making the upgrade.
FF1M History[]
Trio of Tenths (2012-2014)[]
2012[]
Horizon fielded two rookies in their debut season in the form of Brit Sam Bird and Canadian Robert Wickens, and their car was powered by customer Honda engines. In a wet Australian Grand Prix, Bird steered clear of trouble to impressively score points in Horizon's debut race. Although they tended to qualify near the back of the grid, their car was generally reliable with only seven retirements all season. Wickens' high points came in Singapore when he scored his first world championship point, and in Austria where he pulled off a triple overtake going into the Remus curve, while Bird finished in the points a further four times to help Horizon finish 10th in the constructors championship ahead of GRM.
2013[]
Bird was maintained for 2013 but was joined by the experienced German Adrian Sutil. Despite Honda upgrading to works status, the season was difficult with engine power lacking dramatically, although the car remained fairly reliable. Sutil's experience during a wet Hungarian Grand Prix showed when he finished 7th despite careering off the circuit under yellow flags at one point. That plus a couple of other points finishes for the team saw them finish 10th once again, just one point ahead of the struggling Pedersen.
2014[]
For 2014, Sutil was joined by Paul Di Resta, and they had customer Cilmax engines at their disposal. Although the season started slowly, points finishes became frequent as the car improved in speed. A strong higher engine mode plus a car with slippery aerodynamics enabled Sutil to qualify on the front row in Mexico, followed by two surprise pole positions at Hockenheim and Spa, and another strong showing in qualifying at Monza. Meanwhile, Di Resta found himself competing for accident of the season courtesy of a triple barrel roll at Hockenheim. Shortly after the Hungarian Grand Prix, it was announced that Horizon would be pulling out of FF1M at the end of the season. Despite a more competitive showing, the Irish team still found themselves in 10th place in the constructors championship after a tough end to the season.
